Volunteer Emergency Worker Credit

Who Qualifies?
• Volunteer Emergency Workers
• Must have worked 9 months during the tax year.
• Can not have been compensated more than $5,000 for work as a volunteer.

What is the Credit?
• $500 Illinois state tax credit
• Non-refundable 
• Must have $500 tax liability to receive the full credit.
• First-Come, First-Served for 10,000 applicants.

How is this credit acquired?
1.Your fire department must send a list to the OSFM 
2. You must submit an online application with IDOR
3. Make sure your application name EXACTLY matches the fire department list.
4. You will receive a certificate number to use on your Illinois tax return.
5. Once processed, you can look up your certificate number on MyTax.Illinois.gov​​​​​​​
